I’m Dan Leonard of Marathon Retirement Planning. Investments that pay dividends can be a great source of retirement income. Dividends are regular, reliable, and repeatable, but unfortunately not guaranteed!

If I were to ask you what will the price of a stock will be tomorrow you could guess, but you know it would be nearly impossible to get a right. If I asked you what the dividend was going to be for that stock tomorrow, you could look it up and unless a change is announced you would be right. Dividends are not guaranteed, but they are more regular, reliable, and knowable than stock prices.

If you own 100 shares of stock, and it pays a $1 in dividends a year, and the stock drops the 15%, the dividend still $1, so you would still receive $100 year in dividends, even though your account would be down. You can wait a while for it to come back as long as the dividend remains the same, your income remains the same. If the stock goes up by 15% and the dividend remains the same, your account is worth more, but again your income remains the same.

The key to investing for income is income from dividends is a function of how many shares you own, not the price of those shares. The price is only important the day you buy the shares, after that, the dividend and the amount of shares you own are what is important.

If you want to talk about investing for income, you can click on the box in the bottom left of your screen to set up a meeting or a call to discuss a plan to create retirement income from dividends.
